Another Successful Year for Erin Kelly and Play Ball for Miracles

Saturday, April 14, 2007

On Saturday, April 14, 2007, the skies parted and the rain let up long enough for the 3rd Annual Play Ball for Miracles Softball Tournament to take place in Warinanco Park. Created by Erin Kelly, the tournament raises money for Children’s Miracle Network, who then in turn uses the money to support local hospitals that specialize in children’s care.

Sponsored for the 3rd consecutive year by the Elizabeth NJ Firemen’s Federal Credit Union, PBFM has grown from a single men’s division tournament with only 6 teams participating into a 3 division (Men’s, Women’s and Co-Ed) tournament with 20 teams participating.

Opening Ceremonies took place on Field 8 in Warinanco Park with representatives of Children’s Miracle Network there to explain the importance of their cause. Also on hand were children who benefit from the care these hospitals give and the Mayor of Elizabeth, Chris Bollwage who threw out the first pitch to Wealth Management player, Tom Langan.

6 games began throughout the park, kicking off what would be an 8 hour event. Teams play in a one-pitch game, meaning players have one opportunity per at-bat to connect with the softball. They will either get a hit, walk, or be out. One-pitch games average 45 minutes and allow the tournament to take place in a single day with each team guaranteed at least 3 games.

Teams in the Co-Ed Division included Stewart’s Root Beer, managed by Cliff Williams of Rahway, Danny Boys, managed by Graig Vuotto of Staten Island, NUJAX, managed by Nicole Condomitti of Brooklyn, City Elite, managed by Carmen Sierra of Elizabeth, Flying Squirrels, managed by Amanda Gruss of Bedminster and Shockwave, managed by Jerry Garcia of Elizabeth. Stewart’s Root Beer remained undefeated all day and ultimately took home the Championship trophy after defeating Danny Boys in the Championship Game.

The Women’s Division is the perfect example for how large this tournament has grown, as 2007 is the first year that women participated in the tournament. Teams included All Heart, managed by Deb Huzer, All Fired Up, managed by Chris Masterson, Fenton Tile Company, managed by Jennifer Lombardo and Bomb Squad, managed by Cathy Evans. All the games in this tournament were close, but ultimately Fenton Tile and All Fired Up met in the Championship game. With a final score of All Fired Up 7 and Fenton Tile 6, the competition was in full force all day.

Finally, the Men’s Division returned with another outstanding showing. 10 teams participated, including, Elizabeth Fire Department/FMBA Local 9, managed by John Gwaldis, Union Fire Department, managed by Jimmy Adams, Michelino’s, managed by Mike LoBrace of Elizabeth, Wealth Management Group, managed by Mington Garcia of Elizabeth, Anger Management, managed by Bill Dillon of Clark, The Elizabeth Latin Americans, managed by Ralph Amado. The Elizabeth Police Department sponsored two teams, managed by Matt Williams and Jimmy Kearns. Last year’s champions, Buffy’s Tavern, managed by George Brokaw, and second place finishers, Caldwell Dental Associates, managed by Dr. Michael Volpe, returned to defend their titles.

Competition was tight in this category also, with many teams losing by only 1 run. However, Elizabeth Fire Department and Wealth Management managed to remain undefeated all day and finally met head to head in the Championship Game. Wealth Management would be crowned Champion this year, defeating the Elizabeth Fire Department 7 to 6.

The Play Ball for Miracles Charity Softball Tournament runs annually, previously run in September, it has found a new home in April, thus allowing teams to use the tournament as practice before the Spring Softball season begins. Efforts will begin again next January to put together the 4th Annual Play Ball for Miracles Softball Tournament, tentatively set to take place on April 12, 2008. Sponsorships and participation will be available to help reach our goal of $10,000. To find out additional information, please log on to:
