Alyssa Brandle, from Martinsville, New Jersey and Hernan Salvatierri-Carpio, from the Bronx in New York are two of the many children who were selected as their state's representative in Champions Across America, a national Children's Miracle Network program presented by CO-OP Financial Services.
Alyssa, 14 years old, and Hernan, 12 years old, were chosen to act as ambassadors for their states to share their stories with children from across the nation and Canada. Alyssa is now a healthy 8th grader who lived with seizures for most of her life. At 10 years old, Alyssa risked a 10 hour surgery that could have caused damage to the brain. Now she is seizure free and off all medications. Hernan is battling Lymphobastic Lymphoma and Leukemia, which requires ongoing intensive chemotherapy.
The annual Celebration is a time to pay tribute to all who have been making miracles happen for the children and their families. These miracles could not happen without the many dedicated doctors and nurses, the Program Directors from the hospitals, our sponsors who raise millions of dollars for Children's Miracle Network each year and the dedicated staff.
During the week the families attend concerts, special dinners, sponsor pin exchange, and breakfast with the Disney characters. They also have time to enjoy the many Disney attractions or relax by the beautiful pools at the Coronado Springs Resort. Some of the entertainment was presented by Air Supply and the Jonas Brothers, three very talented brothers ages 12, 15 and 17. The highlight of the week was a special ceremony where every child was presented a medal for their courage in the face of adversity. The presenters included Marie Osmond and John Schneider – Co-Founders of Children's Miracle Network, Lauren Nelson – Miss America 2007, Steve Young – football great, Mary Lou Retton – gymnastic champion, and a host of other celebrities.
Not only did the children enjoy a stay in Orlando, they spent several days in our nation's capitol where they had the opportunity to visit the White House and the honor of meeting President Bush. He spent time talking with the children and their parents. They also visited Capitol Hill and met with several senators.
They returned home with many fond memories that will last a lifetime.
There are 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals throughout the United States and Canada serving 17 million children each year. These hospitals treat children with all types of medical challenges including cancer, trauma, heart, lung, muscular disease, birth defects, AIDS, and many other health-related issues. All monies locally raised stay local.
