Three children from the Metro NY area were chosen to act as ambassadors to represent millions of kids who are served each year by Children's Miracle Network.
Three children from the Metro NY area were chosen to act as ambassadors to represent millions of kids who are served each year by Children's Miracle Network. The Champions Across America program, sponsored by CO-OP Network, is a public awareness program that generates significant local and national publicity each year.
Twin brothers, Jason and Johnson Varghese, representing Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, are New York's Champion Children. The twins inherited a severe type of liver disease called Wilson’s Disease. As a result of this disease Jason eventually experienced total liver failure. One week after procuring an organ, Jason’s body rejected this liver, resulting in another organ transplant. Jason has been fortunate to be able to return to school. Johnson was tested, since the disease is an inherited recessive condition, and he also had a severe form of the disease. After some complications with finding a medication, he has done extremely well. He appears to be surviving without the need for a transplant. With a love of art they painted a ceiling tile that would help other kids have something to look at in the treatment rooms. Both brothers have been a very positive force in helping other children at the hospital. They stand out because of their poise and incredible maturity and sense of giving.
Lauren Choi, representing Children’s Specialized Hospital, is New Jersey’s Champion Child. Lauren and her brother were involved in a motor vehicle accident while on their way to a church youth group. The accident left Lauren with a spinal cord injury and little hope of ever walking again. Lauren’s parents could not believe that their once active six-year-old was going to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. Lauren, however, had a different plan. After being placed on an intensive therapeutic team and receiving physical, occupational and recreational therapy, Lauren began to show some movement in her extremities. Before long she was walking with the assistance of a walker and the miracle is that Lauren has returned to school where she is a happy 1st grader. She uses a walker and has a brace on one leg but she is an inspiration to all the other children. Her smile and tenacious spirit are a testament to her character.
